The custom of wearing gemstones as birthstones dates back to the 16th century. A standardized birthstone list was formulated in 1952. It was sponsored by the Jewellery Industry Council, and was later accepted and approved by several leading jewellery-related institutions in America, notably the Retail Association and the American Gem Society.
